Mark chipped his tooth last month which meant he needed a root canal and a crown! We did the Ecuadorian thing and got three “presupuestos” (estimates) regarding the cost. It was rather sobering to find out that the price tags varied considerably ($200 to $1,200).
August is not a month when you want to have something go wrong—especially in the dental department. Just like Europe, August is a month reserved for vacations and that means your regular dentist may not be around!
It’s comforting to know that dentistry is more modern than you might imagine. All the offices that Mark visited had ultra-modern equipment, including a flat screen TV that allowed you to watch your dental work being performed or you could switch “channels” and watch your favorite TV program, movie or just listen to music. In the States, I just got to listen to the sound of the drill, which wasn’t all that comforting. 
If you’re looking for a dentist, we highly recommend Dr. Rodriguez.

Dr. Rodriguez speaks a little English, but if you have a beginning level of Spanish, you will do fine.
We found him months ago and have had EXTENSIVE work done by him... We LOVE him and recommend him to all! He has done cosmetic dentistry on many of the Banco Pichincha managers, as proof of his skill spread like wild-fire there. If someone is worried about the language barrier, it's worth bringing a translator, many of whom will do it for free, lunch, or for a fee of $8-$10 an hour. You will save much more than that with Dr. R for sure!

Glad you found Dr. Rodriguez so helpful. He was trained at the University of El Bosque, Bogata, Columbia. My hubby is using him a lot; he just broke a tooth last week and needs a crown. In fact, he's seeing him this Tuesday!

Great information. I will be in Cuenca in a couple of weeks and am trying to decide on a dentist to contact. Needing a couple of bridges done. Where in the price range did this dentist fall?? I noticed you said the prices varied greatly. Thank you for any info you can give me!!
Mikki, The prices do vary greatly in Cuenca. I've noticed that Latina Clinica is the most expensive. We were quoted $1,200 for a crown and Dr. Rodriquez did it for $200. We also go to Dr. Alvarado and he's a little more expensive and recently a root canal, crown and post was $600. Hope this helps!
